Fined £50 For Trading As Dentists

; , AUCKLAND, July 12. Seven dental mev.kanics were proseTjuted in. the Magistrate's Court today on information laid by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Dental Association. The allegation was that defendants had practised as dentists vvhereas their only qualilication was that of dental lnechanics. Mr. L. P. Leary, for the prosecution, produeed a number of dentures which/ he said, were made by defendants for one man — a policeman. Mr. Leary said the dentures had a " nuteraeker ' efl'ect and none litted. Counsel added that dental mechanics were reputablo men of skill working on the instructions of dentists. Unfortunately, however, there was a certain type who set up raoms and performed an illegal lfrade/ Aln rnost eaees defendants refused to'give receiots. i .Mr. Trevor Henrv, for defendants, said their experience ranged from 3(; down to S years. Two were returned nieii and the work they were now doing they had done for the armed forces during the war. Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., said defendants, who were not registered, had deliberately committed a breaeh oi the law. There was always a danger of ineoinpetence and lack of skill causing injury.
