Received Wednesday, 10.15 a.m. DERJtJY, July 12. With three minutes to go and hiv,e runs required for N.Z. to beat Derbyshire by seven wickets, Waliace square cut Copson to the boundary for four! It was another exciung finish in which New Zealand h^d to' score 106 in 70 minutes. ii Chief credit for this eighth win went to Sutcliffe (48 not out) and Hadlee (43), who scored 77' in 40 mihutes, It was a sterner affair than the exhilarating finish at Hampshire for Jackson and Copson, DerbyShife's pace^ bowlers, were a more difficult proposition and it was hard work for Hadlee and Sutc.ifife, both of whom batted delightfully with the correct proporticfh of care and aggression. Derbyshire did very well to extend New Ze'aland in this manner. uenturies were scored first by Elliott (104) and then by Revill (145? not out).. «Revill was dropped twice and a third catch also went beggmg. Race Against Time. The county made 355 and set the New Zealanders a race against time. Hadlee sent i'h Reid with Sutcliffe, but at 14 Copsou sent Reid's off stiimp flying when lie attempted a vicious pull. Smith was r-caught behind the wicket off a. typical swish, and Hadlee arrived with 86 runs wanted in 50 minutes. Jackson, bowling- a trifle short but aiways accurately, was extremely difficult to handle and earlier runs came from Copson. • Sutcliffe mixed off-drives with pulls for four boundaries, and Hadlee pulled nve fours, but most of their runs had come in scampered ones, twos and threes, which meant fleet sprmting.,
Otlds Evened. After 35 minutes (halfway) 42 runs had been scored and 64 were wanted. GraduaTy the odds were evened — 54 wanted in 30 minutes, 27 in 20 minutes— and then for some obscure reason the slow bowler, Rhodes, replaced Copson and Hadlee took eleven from him in one over. The runs required were squared with time left at 14^and then nine were wanted in nine minutes. Hadlee hooked Jackson beautifully to leg. It looked a six all the way, but Marsh, right in position, took a fine right-handed catch. Waliace raced in. Sutcliffe pulled Rhodes for a four and a single was taken from Jackson, with three wanted. Copson came on, but too late, and Waliace provided the winning hit. It was a grand finish to a rather dour day, which was even hotter than yesterday. f. ■ Details , f > DERBYSHIRE.
