War Service And Teachers' Superannuation
WELLINGTON, July 12. The Government has declined a request by the New Zealand Educational lnstitute - that the superannuation Act be amended to enable discharged servicemen to count" for^superannuation purposes War service ,prior:.t'o entry into the eaucation profession. Writing to the -Minister of Finance, Mr, Nash, the- institute's secretary, Mr. Ashbridge, pointed out «hat War service was recognised for grading, salarie's and leave of abstnce, and it was considered that it should also be recognised for superannuation purposes. The question; he Said, was particularly important at present, because of the Education Department's proposals for emergency training for applicants over 21. Any ex-serviceman accepted for training would be credited with his war service except for superannuation, .. // and if the institute's request was ' granted, added -the letter, addinonal recruits might be enticed to help out in the present. emergency. Replying for Mr. Nash, Mr. Nordmeyer said he had given considerable thought to the proposal, but in view of the far-reaching effects such an amendment. would have, not only in additional expense but - - •also in disturbin'g conditions in other classes of employment, he regretted that it was impossible to Udd further to the concessions which were being made in respect of war service.
