HURDLES TO RULING MASTER
The Wellington owned and Awapuni trained mare Gaiety set , the seal upon lier fame witli her victory in the Wellington Steeplechase, Saturday's feature .event at Trentham and oue of New Zealand's greatest jumping events. Perfectly ridden by, M. Andrews who won a New Zealand Cup on Classform, 'Gaiety joined issue with Pirst Act at the last fence and frorh there they fought a thrilling battle with the honours going to Gaiety by not'.hmeh over a length. Pirst Act, left in charge when Prize Ring .wea^ened suddenly half a mile from home, went down with colours fiying and was great in defeat. Master Play, from Riccarton, was third, and Welldrop, from Ellerslie, f0urth. ' i 'i Gaiety is owned by A. W. and C. L. Lyster, of Wellington, and she is trained by J. J. Waller, at Awapuni. The winner 's . share of the £3500 stake was £2275. The Trentham Hurdles was w.on by Ruling Mastef,"from Ellerslie, the Whyte Handicap by Celebration, from Wanganui, and the Stewards'- Handicap by the champion, Da Vinci, which carried 10.3 and won decisively from a high class field. The weather was not unpleasant but there was light rain'at times and a cold breeze until, later in the day, there was bright sunshine. The attendance was good and the totalisator investments amounted to £185,058|, compared with £164,165 on the first day last year, the increase heing £20,893£. There were 14 starters in the haek and hunters ' steeplechase and the winner was Beau Court, from Waverley, which, well ridden by F. Buchanan, was with Tomahawk and Young 150 b run ning to the home stretch and then drew right avvay to win as lie liked by 12 lengtlis from Young Bob six Iengths 111 front of Sailor's Song. Bailor's Song, wliose rider had lost his irons, flnished well to get third money from Tomahawk. Rere Tere was lifth. The unlucky runner was Supreme , Shepherd which was out in front from the six furlongs and going very much like the winner when he was run off hy a riderless horse at the fence half a mile from°home. However, Beau Court won well and is likely to go on to bigger victories. Laindon lost his rider at the seconci fence, Carnforth fell at the third, and Ernbrae at the fourth. Wlien Master Meruit sw'erved at the failen panel of the last fence he lost his rider and it was left to Gaiety to tackle First Act. First Act showecl great courage and so did Gaiety in the punishing finish, and Gaiety finauy headed First Act and won going away by over a length. The field was probably one of the biggest ever sent away from the mile start at Trentham. Mr. L. G. Morris sent them away in perfeet line and after the race for positions Celebration and Deprive led from Folkestone, Miss Bairnsfather, Opulent, Fortune ,'s Smile, Indian Dawn, Akbar, Indian Song and. Carnegie. The field, in very elose order, was right across the course as heaas were turned for home. Celebration hn the front well below the distance and there were challenges from both sides. Celebration,- howe'ver, was brilliantly ridden by-W. J. Broughton and she won by a length from Super Flight two Iengths in front of uAkbar, and then in close order were Carneghe and the fast-
