N.Z. GIVEN STIFF TASK

, Listless Batting Reffects Strain Qf Tour Received Friday,- 9.30 a.m. OLD TRAFT'ORD, July 7. ? The strtnn of the tour eaught up with the 'New Zealanders' ac Oid ' Trafford today. 3 When Lancashire declared at their overnight total of 467 for flye 3 and sent them in on a pqrf eti wic- ? ket, there . was. a -fired and listless 3 look ab,out the Kew Zealand bati ung. Tiiey were dismissed for 237 and had- to follow on for the first t time since they began' the tour. In 3 the last h'our of the day they-scorea r 48 without loss and require 182 to avoid an innings defeatr To say that the team was weary '- is not to mahe exeuses, but to state ' a faot. So far the New Zealanders have been remarkably suecessful [ and their record, both against Eng- ' land and the eounties, has been ' exeellent, but they are only human and the long succession of sun- | burnt days and . hardening grounds 1 has taken its toll of their energy ! and coneentration. Little Taste For Batting. Against Lancashire bowling that was never more than steady^. but 1 aided by exeellent field placing and Leiding, their best batsmen were rather mech'anical and they went through the motions of batting with little taste for it. Hadlee alone hit. with relish and rapidity, and once again Rabone distinguished himself. Though he bow^d well and long during the second test, against Gloucester as well as Lancashire, he opened the innings, with Scott in Sutclifle's absence and batted steadily and profitably. , Details:— 1 LANCASHIRE.
