Guarding Nurses Against Tuberculosis
LONDON, July 6. A eareful study of the incidence of tuberculosis among nurses in New Zealand hospitals indieates that this disease is an occupational hazard in Dominion, said Miss Elizabeth Bridges, instructor at the nurses' post-graduate school iu Wellington, in the course of a paper read at the Commonwealth and Emnire Tuljerculosis Conferp.rif.fl.
An initial investigation carried out by the New Zealand Department oi Health, she said, showed that 556 eases of tuberculosis or of minimal infeetion occurred among nurses during a period of six years. This represented an incidence of 16.2 per tliousand. Steps had been taken to ensure that all nui-ses underwent a eareful medical examination on eommencing training and that detailed records were kept of all eases of aetual or suspected tubercular infection. Nurses' living and working quarters were regularly inspeeted aptd in general the conditions both during duty hours and when off duty were considered to be good.
