Shannon School's Activities
"At a meeting of the Shannon Sehool Committee, held last even.ng, the headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, . prefiented his report for the ihpnth. pf June as follows: — "The schodf 'roil stands at 164 tooys and 15.0 ^rlSj a total of 314, which is an ipcredse 0f two sinee last moiith. The attendance, which has been much - afiected by sickness, has averEige.d.138 fooys and 126 girls. The distrl5t riurse, Sister Macdonald, carried out her routine inspection of the pupils during the month and this was f ollowed by a full medical inspeetion of eertain classes and families in the school by the schools' medical ofiicer, Dr. W. Furness. The doctor spent four days at the school during which time she was able to meet several parents and discuss their child^ ren's health with them. Visits were made to the school by Messrs G. H. Stubbs and H. F. McClune, school inspectors. "The school's diamond jubilee celebrations were conducted over the King's Birthday weekend and a report of the activities were placed on the school records. Miss J. Davis and Mrs. J. Rogers have been permanently appointed to the teaching staff. The mid-year survey of the pupils' work has been carried out. ; "The school's senior basketball and rugby teams have played matches against other schools during the past four weeks and have acquitted themselves well against good competition. Trips have been made to Foxton and Poroutawhao. The ground has been prepared for the planting of a large.number of
native trees in me nanve reserve. Upon the arrival of the trees from the Education Board, an Arbor Day ceremony will be held and the tree planting done. Thanks are offered to Mr. C. Stern for his gift of a number of native trees during this month. "Sinee the grounds were resealed it has been necessary to repaint the tennis and basketball courts. This work has now been completed. The caretaker, Mr. E. Chester, has effected considerable repair workto the fencing at the school baths and is now proceeding with repairs to ithe outside sea'ts in the shelter jsheds. The memorial archway was jirepainted for the jubilee, and -thanks are offered to Mr. A. Thomson for the assistance he gave by Ipainting the lettering on the stone.Work.,. * "Ihe Parent-Teachers' Association held its annual meeting during the month when Mr. E. Barber was
elected president, with Mr. J. P. ivicNeile as secretary and, Mr. N, ,L. Bryson treasurer. Films were shown by Messrs. F. N. Gibbons and Bayley, of Palmerston North.
