Several farmers and others had oft'ered to employ and accommodate whole families. More applications were desirable 'from persons willing to accept married couples with either one or two children and widows with one child. It was ualikely thsit the single women would beavailable for work in private homes. Most of them were seleeted for hospital work. Mr Boekett said widows and mothers with one child each would be alloeated mainly to 'institutions which could provide them with accommodation but other jobs would be considered if accommodation was. available,; -either on the job or near it. The children were, for the most part; of sehool age- and a few of working age. Those classed'as ' elderly ' ' included persons aged 45 or more. They wer;e medically fit and- anxious to work . bdt not i considered suitable for ,heavy jobe. The men and women of this grOup were suitable for work such as gardening, light faetory work or odd jobs. Married and single men include.experienced axemen and others with farm experience.
