Britain Proposes Free Legal Advice
Received Wednesday, 7 p.pi. LONDON, June 29. TI;e opinion that the' Legal Aid and Advice Bill under whieh the British Government proposes to provide free legal advice for people drawing under a certain minimum ineome, might prove too expensive, w'as expressed by the" Lord Chancellor, Yiscount Jowitt, when the Bill was given its second reading in the House of Lords. . Answering suggestions that some classes of cases now; excluded, suc"h as .actions for defamation of charaeter, should be brouglit within the provisions of the Bill, Yiscount Jowitt said: "It- islidle to thipk we are in a position wdiere we can lightl^A contemplate taking on still further expense. It is true this might cost only £2,000,000 but that amount may well prove to be the straw on the back of the taxpayer who is the poor camel. I am realiy apprehensive about the expense of this seheme.
