win in hawke's bay steeples The weather was ideal for the first aay of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting, being, more like spring than mid- . winter. There was a large erowd and the totalisator turnover showed an inerease of £9395, the total being £58,025, compared with £48,630 last year. The two leaders in the first division of the Hastings Plate, Peer Gynt and Glide In, stayed there till the close and paid the dividends, with the former winning by a head. Eour lengths away was Queen 's Emblem and beating the rest of a strung out field were Pere Leon, Eoyal Visit and Viceroy. Despot sat in behind Lady Viv in the second division, with Indian Moon, Madine and Paper Spy in attendance till tliey got into line. Then Despot assumed control, to be challenged in the last furlong by Eearless Gain. Pulling out a bit more just short of the post Despot won by a liead. Over the final oue hundred yards of the Winter Handicap, Eafldale gathered .in Kippo and then ran past liim in effortless fashion to win by a chink of daylight, wliile Blue Spec, who had always been prominent, was third. Cheerfui Night, Gildchase, Titahi and Vanb Master were next. Early Gildchase, Salut d 'Amour, Blue Spee, Titahi and Parlous were doing the spade work, but running to the turn Parlous gave ground and bpth Kippo and Earldale were iy. the picture and the former got to the front at the distanee. A masterly exhibition of fencing won the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase for Master Meruit, who, with a round to go, went to the front ~ and thereafter made the others look what they were — a collection of moderates. Leghorn and Northfield set the early paee with the top weight snuggled in behind, but at" each fence his magnificent leaping had him on terms with the pair in the vanguard. Not desiring to carry on the act for the final circuit Midwood eleeted to take over and from then on it was ' a procession. Six furlongs from home Gay Eouen looked like being second but he made two errors and Skywriter ran him down for that berth, while on the post Captain Jesse also headed his stableinate.
