Manakau-bred Horse Making Name In Australia
. Seven years ago a foal of attractive appearance scampered by his mother's side on the farm of Mr. G /M, O'Swllivan n,at* Manakau. Named Manakau after his home town, this geiding by Croupier from Balgowlah is now making a name for himself in Australia. Favoured with a heavy track, Manakau scored an easy win on June ll in the main flat event at Flemington, the Sandringham Handicap, for which he was made .ioint
first favourite. This was his latest success. The previous week he had ruri a dead heat with another New Zealand-bred horse, Vantage (Battle Song — Skyrest) , at Cauifield. The going was heavy and Vantage appeared to master Manakau a few yards from the post but the latter made a brilliant finish to dead heat. Manakau took-time to reach first class company. He started racing as a three-year-old and won a race and was placed twice at four and five years. Several minor successes came his way prior to his victory in the £-1000 Launceston Gold Cup. He won the £1100 Bendigo Cup and following on that the Williamstown Racing Club's Hobson Handicap, of £1096. His next appearance was in the Hobart Cup, of £1000, which he captured in almost sensational circumstances, his connections taking more money out of the ring than since the days of Phar Lap. Then came his victories at Cauifield and Flemington. Mr. O'Sullivan, as breeder of Manakau, is justifiably proud of his ekploits in Australia, and of the f act, that he started in the last Melbourne Cup, running an excellent race, and was unluckily beaten in the Sydney Cup of two and a hah miles.
