WELLINGTON, June 24. With the opening of the Wellington winter meeting at Trentham a fortnight away, form at the Hawke's Bay meetiiig tomorrow and the following Saturday will be closely followed with interest as most of the horses also have engagements at Trentham. Main interest will centre in how Master Meruit will stand up to the three miles cross-country journey in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. If his f'orelegs stand up to the ordeal .Master Meruit will come on to Trentham to tackle the Wellington Steeplechase. However, there still appears to be some doubt as to whether he will stand up to big fencing contests. Skywrifer the young steeplechaser from the north, will have a strong following tomorrow. He is regarded as. holding a very good chance of winning his first important cross-country race. If he succeeds tomorrow he will come into f avour at W ellington.

Skywriter finished third to First Act and Roman Ned in the Frankton Steeplechase at Waikato on the first day and followe'd this up with a good fourth in the Waikato Steeplechase on the second day. For his first two attempts over country Skywiriter's performances were most encouraging. With .mialler jumps at Hastings Skywriter looks like being one of ' the nardest to teat tomorrow. With Broughton up Kippo will be at a short price in the Winter Handicap. He has made an excellent recovery from his recent mishap and has been working well. He shoul'd be Verynhard to beat tomorrow, his most serious opposition being Welcome Guest, Guildchase, and Titahi. Peter Ne'son showed at the Manawatu Hunt meeting that he ■ was not far from his best form and at Paeroa tomorrow he should he well in the picture in the Ohinemuri Handicap. His finishing run in the Palmerston North Handicap was so sustained that repetition of it tomorrow should bring him among the lea'ders at the post. He might find strongest opposition from Bramble Leighon, Prince Chat, Tilting and Dakota. Prospects for Hawke's Bay, Mara- | marua, at Paeroa and Ashburton are: —
