Nauru Phosphate Industry Almost Normal Again
NEW YORIC, .June 22. Notable aehicvcmcnts in restoring war damnge on tlie island of Nauru and continnerl progress in providing health, and social serviees, are reported by tlie Australian Government in a survey of ibe adininistration of Nanru submitted to ihe General Assembly of TJnited Nations. Tlie report covers 1947 and 1948 and has been submitted for examination in the Trusteeship Council. The report says the Administration's chief taslc during the period was the restoration of institutions, industry and propertv destroyed by the Japanese during the oeeupation. "This aim required the full coneentration of all the resoure.es and energies of the island to hasten and remove the phvsieal effects of war. The process has beem difficu'it but in manv respee.ts notable aehievements have been made,'7 The phosphate industry, whieh is the sole eeonomie, means of the territorv, has been largelv restored and tlie renort says that bv the t end of 1949, production should be normal again.
