Shannon Borough Affairs
- The foknightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was. held on Tuesday evening an-d was presided over by the Mayor, .Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald. Present were Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, R. . S. Downes, L. G. Sayer, C. G. Wishart, and H. Aitchison. An apology fof absence was received from Cr, C. M. Cronquest: 1 In reply to the council's inquiry regarding the suitability of the section on the corner of Stout and Venn Streets, bwned by the Polic'e Department, for a memorial hall site, the Superinten'dent of Police, Palmerston North, in a letter, advised that he would make an inspection of the section and report to the Commissioner of Police, who would inform the council of the position. A petition signed by four Margaret Street residents, asking for an improvement to the water supply in their area, was received and the matter was left in the han'ds of the chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, for attention. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. S. W. Carter and the late Mr. T. Nepia, both being old and respected residents of the town. The town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, advised that the late Mr. Carter was a member of Shannon's flrst borough council. With regard to the water supply improvement scheme, the engineer forwarded a plan for the Clapham and Ballance Streets area, stating that shortly he would hand to the council the completed estimates. Shannon Motors asked permisiion to erect an after hour air service immediately alongside the present howser station. The necessary permission wasJ.granted on the motion of Cr. Aitchison. It was resolved that a yearly reiital of flVe shillings he charged and the installation he1 carried oUt to the satisfaction of the works committee. The traffic inspector reported that during the month of May a general patrol had been maintained on the roa'ds within the borough and no acCidents had come un'der his notice. » The Shannon Ratepayers' Association wrote asking the council to appoint two representatives to meet the association and the Returned Services' Association to discuss the
question of planting an avenue of trees along Ballance Street as a memorial to those' Who fell in the second World War.. Crs. Sayer and Clayton wefe appoihted^ and will feport back to tne council following the meeting of representatives. Thei chaifmah of the reserves comihittee, Cr. Clayton, reported that concrete posts ha'd been purchased for the domaih fence and the repairs were now in hand. Attention was also being given to the domain seats. It was resolved that the toppin'g of Certain trees in the reserves and in the streets be left in the haiids of Crs. Clayton and Sayer, Cr. Bateman, chairman of the buil-ding eommittee, reported that applications for buildinjg , permits to the value of £50 were- in order arid on his motion the permits were granted. . • * The acting chairman of. the library eommittee, Cr. Downes, reported that the country library service van had called and several of the books had been replace'd. During the absence of the librarian, the Mayoress and Mrs. Tremewan Were assisting.in the library-. The chairman, of the works eommittee, Cr. Sayer, reported that the trouble caused by tree roots in the Stout Street footnath had received attention and later filling would be required. . It had been decided to cease applying metal to the streets in the meantime. It was resolved that the future hiring of the grader be left in the hands of Cr. Sayer. On the motion of Cr. Sayer it was resolved to obtain an opinion from the Municipal Association if the council had power to lease unformed streets and also the position regarding fencing, A verbal request was received from Cr. Sayer for the use of the domain for One Sunday during August for the playing of the annual football match. between the HoroWhenUa and Manawatu Referees' Association. it was granted On the motion of Cr. Bateman. The passing of accounts amount-' Ing to £2^6 0s lOd terminated the business of the meeting.
