Glut Prices For Vegetables
Messrs Townsend and Paul, fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the past week heavy supplies of vegetables have resulted in "glut" values being obtained. However, at Thursday's sale there was a definite improvement in values. There is a particularly strong demand for green peas, new potatoes and silver beet. Tomatoes have taken a very sharp rise, choice lines realising up to 36s 6d per half case. Yardings of poultry have not been particularly heavy and values are very much better than at last week's saies. A particu'arly keen enquiry is being made for turkeys, with all other prime birds in streng demand. Sol d'ors, carnations and daphne have all been realising attractive values. Quotations are as follows: — Fruit: Chinese gooseberries, choice, 18s to 27s; tomatoes, best, 25s to 36s 6d; others, 15s to 24s; |tree tomatoes, 11s to 15s; persimmons, 6s to 8s 3d; meyer lemons, 7s half cases; hothouse tomatoes, 2s 3d to 2s 7d per 1b.; feijoas and grapes, both wanted; passion fruit, ls 6d per dozen; grapefruit, 21s to 27s; sweet oranges, 18s to 27s 9d per bushel. Flowers; Sol d'ors, 21s to 25s per gross; _ poppies, art, 5s 6d to 9s; tangerine, 3s to 5s; carnations, 2^s to 30s per gross; violets, 8s to 9s per dozen bunches; chrysanthemums, best, ls 9d to 3s 4d per dozen blooms; daphne, good demand. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, best, 5s 6d to 6s 3d; medium, 4s to 4s 6d; Black Orpington hens, 9s 6d to 14s; geese, 6s to 7s; white ducks, 9s 6d to 14s; coloured, 6s 6d to 7s 6d all each; cockerels, 2s to 2s 3d; turkeys, 2s to 2s 3d per lb. live weight. Vegetables: Hothouse beans, ls 6-|d; peas, lld to ls 5d; sprouts, 5d to 8d per lb.; beetroot, 9s to 10s; spring cabbage, 11s 6d to 15s 6d per case; savoy, 10s to 13s per sack; cauliflowers, 6s to 12s; pumpkins, 6s to 14s per sack; carrots, 5s to 6s 6d; onio'ns, 10s to 12s 6d; parsnips, 7s to 8s per bag; lettuce, 3s to 6s; marrows, 3s to 5s 6d; leeks, 6s to 10s; rhubarb, 6s to 15s; silver beet, 2s to 4s; spinach, 20s to 30s; white turnips, 6s 6d to 7s 6d cases; kumeras, 25s to 30s; swedes, 14s per cwt.; potatoes, new, ceiling price; chinese cabbage, ls per bunch.
