The vanguard oi Mr. Lewis's 450,000 United Minewor.iters trooped back to work at ' midnight eager for a full week 's wages, before beginning their ten-day vacatjon. Negotiations between Mr. Lewis and the coal managements so far have been fruitless.1 If no settlement is reaehed. by June 30 when the miners' presejit contract expires,' the union's tradition "no eontract, no work" policy Will keep the mines closed indefinitely.
