Expedition Of Sewerage Scheme Sought

Seeking the utmost expedition of Levin's sewerage scheme, the Board of Health has written to the Lev'ip. Borough Council, In the'letter, which was read at last nisht's council meeting, the board added that it would appreciate the pro duction of detailed pans and specifieations at an early date. The town clerk, Mr. H- L. Jehkins, said that on receipt of • the Jette" from the board he had written im.mediately to the engineers- asking them to expedf'e their report, antf had enclosed the board's letter. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. R. A Rrederikson, commented that ther.e was little else that cou'd be do.ne The board had "shaken the counci up" and the council in ''urn had •"shaken up the engineers." "When I was on this counci' previous'y we had letters of the same .tenor from the board," sah Cr, A. w: Parton. He added that he was perturbed that so PtTe nrogress had been made. "How long have we waited . for these nlans and what money is available, if any. to pay for the pipes we have rev ceived? . What is the council'e scheme to finance the whole prpject?" Levin "Soil Sick." Continuing, Cr. Parton said: "As each year goes bv the whole of Lfevin is beeoming soil sick. FPthy. obsolete methods are b.eing used tq drain our biggest industry (the municipal abattoirs) , It is disgracefi}1 and the sooner we can hurry this sewerage scheme along the.better. Are we to wait indefinitely for these plans?" The council had not got the answer to Mr. Parton's auestion about the plans, said Mr. Frederikson. That was a matter for the engineers. It must he aoorecrated that a lot of work had had to he done in regard to their preparation: Aerial photographs had also to fce taken. "I think this council can take credit in that it has moved along further and faster than other councfs. Many of the pipes for the scheme are actually here and an Order-in-Council has been nrepared for the sum of £80/10 for their payment. We cannot get further authority for money un,Lil the plans are approved by the Board o+' Health. I can assure the counci.' that we have been taking all the steps we can, and that in regard to the other noint we have shaken the engineers .along in the matter of the p^ns." -

' Cement Problenj. 'r: Concurring with .-the DeputyMayor, Cr. W. Telford-. added th^t Jeven if the scheme was nut in'c operation , cementi could not be obtaine'd in sufffciently large auantities for the construction of holding J;anks. The soakage pits might be at saturation noint in a certain part of the borough, but on the whole Levin was better off thar other towns in regard to natural drainage. He would agree, however, that all steps shouM be taken to hurry the scheme along. In regard to the abattors he would - poiht out . that Cr. Parton had been a memb'er of that committee years a_go!. and. should have got somq of his plans ihto operation then. "I don't think this letter from the hPard calls^for-a general disCussion on sewerage and draipage in Levin," said Mr. Frederikson. "A1! we can do is write to the engineers for a progress report and fi^d oiit what they have done to date."
