No Conscription Poll In Australia

. . CANBERRA,. June 18. The Australian Government did not propose to amend the law or hold a referendum on conscription, said Mr Chifley in the House of Representatives. Answering Mr H. L. Anthony (Country Party), who pointed out tliat Mr Fraser had said conscription was necessary beeause of the defence needs of New Zealand, he said that any threat to New Zealand would also be a threat to Australia, but that what the New Zealand Government did was entirely its own business. Earlier, the Minister of the Army (Mr C. Chambers) reported\to' the House „that in 12 months, 30,000 enlistments had been received for the Australian permanent and citizen military forces. The target figure was 50,000 in five years.
