Leonardo da Vinci's Great Masterpiece
LONDON, June 17. The famous painting by Leonardo Da /inci, "The Virgin of the Rocks,' rhich was removed from the National lallery 15 months ago for cleaning by lew scientific methods has now been •estored to its place of honour in the lallery which regards it as one of its .reatest treasures. The Times' art critic says that the leaning of this masterpiece proves berond doubt that it is the work of Da Vinci at his mature best and not, as • had been claimed bv some critics, tlu ; work of another artist, Ambrogio D( Pedis. • * j "The Yirgin of the Rocks" is statel to be the only large, reasonably finish i ed and well preserved painting by D: : Vinci during his mature period whicl j can be seen to-day in any gallery in tlu ; world. : The picture was commissioned ii 1483 and was delivered to the° Churcl of San Francesco Grande in Milan ii 1489 still only partlv finished. Df Vinci did further work on it in 1506 but it is still, as the cleaning has re vealed, uncorapleted in some decan.-
