Juvenile Good Manners In Crowded Buses

Received Friday, 8.50 p.m. LONDON, June 17. When the subject of juvenile good manners in buses — or lack of them — was raised during the conference of the National Federation of Women s Institutes in London the conference divided sharply into two camps — one which contended that children should he compelled to give seats in crowded buses to older people, and the other which contended that prolonged standing was had for children and that no compulsion should be used to force them to give up their seats. One delegate, who said she was the mother of three hoys, opened the discussion by claiming that nowadavs everything was made too easy for children. "It is no hardship for a child to stand in a crowded vehicle, ' ' she said. "I know small boys who delight in giving up their seats because it is an . ouportunity to display their gallantry." Other delegates strongly disagreed, and several contended that the place to teach courtesy and good manners was in the home and not by compelling children to give up seats m buses. The discussion ended in laughter when one mother said that she overheard two small boys in a bus one day discussing whether she was old enough to justifv surrendering their seats. "I was," She said, "but I en.ioyed my seat far more as a free gift from the hoys than if they haa received a poke in the back from the conductor." ^vwwvwwwywwwwvvwywwvys^ 0 *
