MR. CHARLES HUGH COCKRELL
It was with deep regret that the many friends and associates of Mr. Charles Hugh Cockrell, learned of his death recently. He was well known in Otaki and Levin, he being a member of the Levin Borough Council for three and a half years until, owing to health reasons, he refrained from seeking re-e'ection. Born in Otaki in 1884, Mr. Cockrell commenced his business career in the Bank of Australasia in that town. He was later accountant for a sawmill at Te Horo and then at Taumarunui and" Wellington. In 1918 he took up farming in . the Levin district, first at Buller Lake, and later in Weraroa Road unti" failing health forced him to retire six years ago. For some years he also operated a milk delivery in Levin. In* N)18 he married Miss Nellie Judd, a member of one of New Zealand's pioneer fafnilies. .Mr. Cockrell was elected to the Levin Borough Council in May, 1944, serving the community well in this capacity until November, 1947. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. E. Gapper and Miss J. Cockrell, and one son, Mr. F. H. Cockrell, all of Levin, and three grandchildren. At the last meeting of the Levin Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, expressed the council's regret at the death of Mr. Cockrell and the sympathy of members with Mrs. Cockrell and family. Councillors stood in silence as a mark.of respect to the memory of their late colleague.
