Manakau had an easy win by 14 games to two in their match agsinst Shannon in.the first round of the Horowhenua Badminton Association's A grade competition. Results, with Manakau players mentioned first in each case, were: — Men's singles: L. Staples beat H. Pope 24 — 23, J. Brvant beat D. Pedersen 21 — 13, M. Staples beat D. Gyde 21 — 1, B. Mather beat O. Tippler 21—10. Ladies' singles: Mrs. W. Phillips beat Miss J. Piggott 15 — 12, Mrs. K. Phillips beat Miss H. Gardiner 17 — 15, Miss R. Robinson lost to Miss D. Ritchie 12 — 15, Mrs. S. Ridge beat Miss B. Gardiner 15 — 10. Men's doubles: M. Staples and Bryant beat Pope and Pedersen 21 — i5, L. Staples and Mather beat Gyde and Tippler 21 — 15. Ladies' doubles: Mesdames W. Phiriips and K. Phillips beat Misses Piggott and H. Gardiner 15 — 6, Miss Robinson and Mrs. Ridge beat Misses Ritchie and B. Gardiner 18—17. Combined doubles: L. Staples and Mrs. W. Phillips beat Pope and Miss Piggott 21 — 19, Brvant and Mrs. K. Phillips beat Pedersen and Miss H. Gardiner 21 — 17, M. Staples and Miss Robinson beat Gyde and Miss B. Gardiner 21 — 3, Ma.ther and Mrs. Ridge lost to Tippler and Miss Ritchie 14 — 21.
