CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. An earthqiiake, originating apparently off Banks Peninsu^, was recorded at Christchurch Magnetic Observatory at 4.19 a.m. .today. There were no reoorts of damage, but the shock was sufficient to waken peop-e. The 'direc'tor of the observatory, Mr. H. F. Baird, said that the shock appeared to have originated about 35 miles from Christchurch.
