New Zealand Batsmen Fail In Stiff Task Set By England

Received Wednesday, 9.25 a.m. \ LEEDS, June 14. The first Test between New Zealand and England ended^ in a draw after a final day of interesting cricket. New Zealand made 341 in their first innings in reply to England's 372. This gave England a lead of 31, to which was added 267 for four wickets. This left New Zealand to get. 291 in two and a-half hours. They gathered 195 for two wickets.

England were at the wicket for three hours and five minutes in tneir second innmgs, and their 267 was scored at the rate of 90 runs houriy. Hucion was out second ball. Washbrook rnade 103 (1101 out) and Mann was 49 (.not out) in 24 minutes. When England's captain declared just before% 3.30 p.m., he set New Zealand the task of scoring 291 in two and a haif hours. Had he left his declaration until after 3.30 p.m., New Zealand would have had anotner 20 minutes of batting; but with his eye on the English bowling andr the potential scoring rate of the New Zealand batsmen, Mann declared in time to take the tea interva.l of 20 minutes. It was practically an impossible task he set New Zealand — 120 houriy, which . was a rate that neither side had achieved at any time during the match. New Zealand's reply was by no means half-hearted, however — 195 for two, Sutcliffe 82 and Smith 54 (not out) — and the hdhours of this first test were -equally divided. Whien the match was resumed today, Mooney • and Cowie batted another halfhour to bring New Zealand's total to 341. They put on 57 for a tenth wicket partnership, the highest made by New Zealanders for this wicket since Allcott and Bernau made 51 against Kent at Canterbury in 1927. Cowie, who had Scott as runner owing to having pulled a muscle in the left leg while fielding yestefday, did most of the scoring by snicks and prods, and made the respectab'e total of 26 not out. He will not field. Mooney was dropped by Hutton at short leg off -Bailey before he added to his score. Bailey had him at 46 when Edrich took a catch at first slip. • It was the second new record partnersirp in which Mooney figures, the other being at Loi'ds with Rabone. The wicket had dried out thoroughly.and had none of the intricacies of yestei^ay. Details: — ENGLAND. 6
