Manawata River Control Plan Under Way
The big scheme of the ManawaJy. Catchmerit Board for the -00111101, oi' the Manawatu River from. the orge to the sea is now in the ■^dvanced stage of planning and it is considered that the final details will be annolmced s«"me time this year. The originax scheme before the board was 'dr«.wn up in three different stages by the then engineer (Mr. D. J. Halley). The new scheme, which is a modified version of that prepared by Mr. Halley, will provide for a. concerted plan of action in corU-rolling the river from the Gorge t.) the sea, avoiding the pitfalls of suecemeal ; work. • The plans for the lower Mana- ! watu are a compromise between the . original proposals for a diversion 'through a cut straight to the sea 'from WaU's Spillway, at Moutoa, land the Soil Conservation and the I Rivers Control Council's suggesIgestion for an enlarged controlled spillway. It i's understood that the plan now being completed calls for the installation of sluice gates controlling an expanded spillway at Moutoa.
