Queensland Game Was Not Inspiring
Reeeived Monday, 10.45 p.m. BRISBANE, June 13. Tlie Maoris defeated Queensland today by 13 points to 8. D-elamere, Heperi and Raureti scored tries and Kenny converted two of them. For Queensland Ahern and Fogerty scored tries, Gostello eonverting one. The game was played _ before. 5000 ; spectators. ,, The Maoris' listless and unimpressive form was not a true indication-of their proven ability. The forwards were lifeless and the baclts unsafe handlers
but the defenee was reasonably- sound. . The Queenslanders, who are noted for their solid .forwards, h'eld the Maori i. forwards throughout the match and I lasted longer than the Maoris in tight play in the latter stages of the matcli. Queensland dominated the game territorialiy and were regarded as uiilucky not to beat the Maoris. » A'feature of the play was the refusal of the Queensland forwards to admu the superiority of the Maori forwards. There were no further scores until
the Maoris, led by Reid, took the ball i through from a line-out. After a short rush Reid passed' to Heperi who went in-field and crashed over. Kenny goaied. — Maoris 10 — 3. The Maoris were playing confidently now and pressed Queensland. Baureti beat the Queensland half, Ryan, to cross the line. Kenny missed an angular shot. — Maoris 13 — 3. In the dyi-ng stages of the match Queensland rallied. Throwing the ball with the utmost freedom, they opened a backline passing movement which resulted in Fogarty remoralising MeKinley and side-stepping Kenny, to score a runaway try under the posts, which Costello converted. — Maoris 13, Queensland" 8. . #Hard play followed with over-kisking by the respeetive backs but no score eventuated.
