There was a great fmish to the Winter Cup, feature race at Awapuni on Saturday, and the winner was Ngakoti by a head from Renowned, which finished brilliantly. Lord Holland, which was - with Ngakoti setting the paee at the home turn, was nnder a length away "third, and Mission,' Peter Nelson and .Bar Garette were stiref ehed across the eonrse in close attendance on the placed liorses. The sprlnKwWwon by Our Dink, the Collinson Hurdles by E)awn March, and Terhan, winner of the Hack Steeplechase, paid over half a eentury on the win machine. The weather was brilliantly fine and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £64,0144 compared whh £61,378£ on the first day last year, the* increase being £2636. The Wang|tnui-tramed two-year-old, Shar Bian, le'd always in the first division of the maiden and after leading into the straight ahead of Paddy Joe, Lady Quick, Fastidious, Burnous and Golden Robes, finished smoothly to win untroubled by five lengths from Paddy Joe a length in front of Golden Robes. Lady Quick and Burnous were next. Double Scholar piloted . the second division into the straight and was clear of Fearless Gain, Raeedale, Areara, which had been slow to move, Flying Colours, Winter Sport and Wembiey. Double Scholar loolced likely at the disfcance but Areara, with a fine run next the rails, Headed him just short of the line. Prince Coronach and Beguile led into the baek stretch and Beguile led from Prince Coronach and Lord Holland,. Ngakoti, Mission and Peter Nelson,. Master Fox, Angell, Bar Garrette, Ke-, nowned and Sparkling Scholar as the, field made the far turn. Lord Holland and Ngakoti, with Peter Nelson, Mission, Angell and Renowned in close at:" tendance was how they turned for home where Ngakoti went into the .lead. In a punishing finish Ngakoti lasted long enough to beat Renowned by a head. Lord Holland stuck on gamely for third ahead of Mission and Bar Garrette. The steeplechase was won by Terhan from Glad Fox and Griffin and the win dividend was nearly three score. Warwick Prince and Voltaire fell at the first fence and after the double ErkUs Sinfle went into the lead to be weil clear of Peter Quex, Hazsoult, Awaroa Stream and Terhan as they raced down Ihe baek. Glad Fox moved up iuto third place over the stand double second time round and it was at the second or the double that Hazsoult 's rider lost pis irons. Hazsoult and Glad Fox were together in front at the half-mile but after landing over the brush near the three Hazsoult lost his rider. There Terhan made a fast run to lead into the straight ahead of Glad Fox, Tid-Apa, Griffin and Peter Quex. Glad* Fox was unable to make any impression on Terhan over the last furlong and Terhan, which is by Posterity out of Ankl'et, won nffrely by four lengths from Glaa Fox five lengths iri front of Griffin. Roscarea made a fast run approaching the home turn arid was in front from Newel' Post, Gay John, Master Crusoe, First Offence, Snow Saint, Bian Rouge and Village as the Suburban Handicap field straightened up for the run to the judge. She was clear at the distance and she won nicely by two lengths from Master Crusoe. Village was home weil for third three lengths away, and Village, just beat Vanity" Fair, Beauform and Snow Saint which were almost in line. . N L. H. Zulu Boy jumped weil for over a mile. The winner was Dawn March, •which had charge to the last fence, and, after beating off good challenges from Lord Latour and Omaio,' won by a length and a half from Lord Latour a • similar distance in front of Omaio. Mesalliance and Zulu Boy set- a solid paee from the start and they were weil elear of Omaio after half a mile. Omaio joined them at the five ana Dawn March went past them at the three, the ordef into the straight being Dawn March, Lord Latour and Omaio, and they were clear of Sedgemere, Hauiti and Tremeilo. The open seven was a grand race and there was a thrilling finish in which Our Dink just beat Blank Cheque for first and Blue Skimmers just beat Playtos for third monev. After th'e field had travelled three furlongs Blue Skimmers, Playtos, Blank Cheque were. in line ahead of Telegram, Lady Myrtle,Culloden Moor, Sir Royal and Colorado Maid. Blank Cheque- was first to turn., for home and Playt.qs, Blue Skimmers, Telegram and Our Dink wpre; in close, attendance. Blank Cheque finisiied very. gamely but Our Dink "gradually over-l: hauled him and won by a head. Blank\ Cheque was a length' and a half in front' of Blue Skimmers which beat Playtos by a head. Murrayfield, likely at the distance, was a close fourth. Chief Officer, Murrayfield, Battle Strife and Ensign were the early leaders and the order into the straight was Conclusion from Ensign, Double Bid, Chief Officer, Show Mist and Murrayfield.
