Motorist Who Did Not Stop After Accident
W a The seqUel to a collision on May 14 was heard by Mr. A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Otaki, on Thu'rsday. George Minnis McMurray was charged, firstly, with driving without due care and attention and, secondly, with ,failing to stop. Mr. C. F. Atmore, wbo appeared for defendant, entered pleas of guilty. Sergeant W. S. Hughes told the court that a local milk vendor, Mr. H. B: Co.e, was driving, out of Ngaio Street and had made the turn into Tasman Road when he was struck by a vehicle proceeding to the beach. -It "had failed to stop. Mr. Coles' vehicle was putr out of action and suffered damage amounting to £50. A search failed to locate the vehicle responsible for the collision, but later, when attending the damaged truck, de-fendant's . car was noticed proceeding towards the tow.n. He was stopped and admitted- that ■ he • knew the truck had been struck, but did not think it worthwhile to stop. Mr. Atmore stated his cliemt was a first offender, and regretted.'the occurence. . He had swung out too" far through having misjudged a turn to the left. "Failing to stop is a slightly different matter if there is reasonj to believe no injuries have been caused," commented the magis-| trate. "However, there is the1 liability fot the damage done. Ij happen to know de'fendant cannotl pay a heavy fine. He inflicted a fine of £2 on the first charge, and £1 on the second. Costs were £1 2s.
