Stortford Lodge Stock Values
HASTINGS, June 8. New values for store sheep «were established at Stortford Lodge to-day. Prices for in-lamb ewes soared fully 5s a head dearer t'han last week. The yarding of 1800 head was the smallest - f or about two years, and that may have attributed in part to the buoyancy of the in-lamb ewe market, Good winter feed supplies may also have played a part. Shorn wether lambs sold at 32s to 36s 6d, medium woolly wether lambs realised 32s 6d, smali woolly ewe lambs 42s, cull woolly ewe lambs 28s, grqwn wethers 42s 6d to 44s and 2-tooth wethers 36s 9d to 39s 4d. Five year in-lamb ewes made 46's to 49s 3d, small in-lamb 2-tooth ewes 34s 4s, empty 2-tooth ewes 37s lOd. Farmers showed increased eagerness to buy store cattle. The result was a solid market in which the bidding was steady and well spread with values showing a slight improvement on reeent saies. The season's best price foi store bullocks £20 31s, was paid for a forward line of dehorned Herefords, Lighter bullocks realised £14 10s to £14 14s, 20-months steers £11 12s aua weaner steers £8 15s, thyee separate lines bringing this hgure. Empty cows were traded at £9 7s, in-calf cows £9 16s to £9 17s, and small weauer heifera at,£4 10s. Extra prime wethers realised the season's reeord price oi' 53s -4d in the fat sheep section. Apart from these 20 sheep and a few good pens of ewes, quality was generally back on last week in a fairly small yarding. Extra prime wethers brohght 53s 4d, medium weight wethers 44s' lOd to 47s lOd and light 41s 4d to 43s lOd. Prime aged ewes made 34s . 7d to 36s lOd, medium weights 31s lOd to 33s ld and light and unfinished at 27s ld to 28s 10d^ Extra prime young Southdown ewes changed hamls at 44s 7d to 47s lOd, others 40s 7d and light 35s 4d to 35s lOd. Lambs were traded at 35s ld to 36s ld. Quality was lacking in a short entry of 125 head of fat cattle but the demand was lceen and the market fully firm on last week. Prime. ox sold at £21 8s 6d to £23 ls, lighter £19 18s 6d to £20 13s 6d, medium quality heifer? £13 8s 6d to £14 18s 6d, with light aud i unfmished £11 13s 6s to $12 11s, Prime cows made £13 ls to £13 13s 6d and unfmished £10 16s to £11 8s 6d.
