The piekels were Xegroes who were protesting against .Tim Prowisin on the wharves. They said thev averaged onlv one dav's work weeklv since thev were fro'/en out of the Brooklyn waterfront. The mounted police, reinforced bv 'foot patrolinen, sent members of botli factions in the dispute sprawling in the stroet when they eharged. Several poiicemen were hit by flving missiles and some passersbv were knoeked over. ! Later, ]\fr Joseph Ryan, president of the Tnternational Longshoremens' Assoeiation, led an impromptu victorvpar ade down Eighth Avenue.
