AUCKLAND, June 7. Through a direct offer by the Union Steam Ship Company, to increase substantially extra payments made tc watersiders for handling bulk wheat, a hold-up is reported to have been avoided at the port of Auckland today. Work started after an acrimoniohs discussion - at a speeial stop-work meeting of the union, which lasted two hours. Involved in the discussion was the ship Glenpark berthed at Export Wharf. -She arrived on May 30 from Geelong with-90p0 tons of bulk wheat and still has about 4000 tpns to discharge. Eeeling was reported to be running high among Auckland . watersiders, over the failure to settle penal rates- for handling bulk wheat and it was maintained that the Waterfrottt • Industry Authority was "on strike. " It was stated that effors to g6t the authority to come to Auckland and deal with the matter, had failed. Meanwhile, the Union Company, as agents for the Glenpark, is stated to have offer ed an additional rate of Is 4d instead "of 7d for handling the Glenpark 's wheat. This is on the same basis as for slag — ls for dirt and 4d for "grab"' money. It is understood that the union aceepted the offer without prejudice to its application to the Waterfront Industry Authority.
