Many Golfers Attend Otaki Club's Tourney

-*> The Otaki Golf Cluh's annual open tournament was played. during the King's Birthday weekend in favourable weather, with the course in very good order. There were a large number of starters, with visitors from Wellington, Levin, Shannon and Palmerston North. The open championship was won by J. Winterburn, who defeated E. H. Gray' in the final. The first flight was won by K. Thomson, of the Buckley Ciub, with T. O'Rourke as runner-up. The final of the second flight was won by A" Harper, who was taken to the twentieth by J. stern, of Buckley. This game finished in near darkness, wRh matches being lit on the last green to give the players their line of putt. N; D. Anderson defeated R. Blackburn in the final of the third flight, and F. Veysey, of Levin, defeated L. G. Gimb-ei/t in the final of the fourth flight. The medal round played on Sunday morning saw T. L. Mansell return a nett 66, this being five strokes ahead of the next best scores. This resulted in a handicap cut of four strokes. The afternoon bogey resulted in a tie between A. Harper and Z. Gray with two up. The stableford on Monday morning was won by R. Blackburn with 42 points. His medal figures for this round were 78 — 16 — 62. He now plays on a 10-8 handicap. The afternoon four-ball best-ba:l bogey saw some very good cards returned, with two pairs, W. Clark and W. Jepson a:i 1 E. P. Simcox and D. Clark, sharing the prize'. All competitors agreed that the tournament was a great success and it is hoped in future to conduct it on a larger scale over three days. Next Saturday the second round for the Tris Harper Memorial Cup • will be played. This cup is awarded annually to the player returning the three best medal scores in four rounds. The leaders after the first round were W. Rzoska and T. O'Rourke with 70, with P. Willis 'and S. A. Elliott on 71. ^
