Honourable Occupation "There have been some excellent people who have been carpenters d'uring the last 2000 years," was the quiet reply given a defendant ih the Magistrate's Court, Levin, yesterday morning by Mr. A. A. McLachlan, S.M. He was answerihg a statement by defendant that another man involved in the case, which was a civil one, "was only a carpenter." Youths Admonished ! Four youths were admonished | and discharged in the Children's j Court, Levin, yesterday for riding ! Ibicycles at night without lights. It I I was stated that all the youths had j sihce purchased lights, and their bicycles were now properly equipped. The magistrate, Mr. A. A. McLachlan, warned them, however, %at aetioh .would be taken against them if th'ey fepeated the offence.
Sifckness Prevalent Measles and scarlet fever have been reported in the district over the past few weeks, the fofmer affecting attendances at some of the schools, although it appears to , be lessening now. Eight cases of diphtheria, one resulting in a death, were reported at Shannon recently, all th'e cases following in quick succession. The health inspfector, Mr. W. Guinan, stated today, however, that no further cases of suspects had been notified since, and the danger Was considered to have passed. „ Cat Appears In Court. A cat brought a homely atmosphere into the solemn proceedings of the Supreffie Court in New Plymouth this week. He first appeared padding intently acrOss the body of the* CoUrt, crossed in front of the jury, paUsed to cdnsider his next move, and then disappeared from view. The Court was startled when the cat jumped lightly oh to a CUsriion chair, then Oh to the Judge's desk, whare he squatted on a book at his Honour's eibOW. His RonoUr smiled, patted his visitor, then lifted hihi dOwn and bahished him from the sanCtUhi. Siiccess Of Blind Students. Mr. A. Morton, the blirid'student phySiotherapist of Mt-. Albert, Auckland, who is studying , in London, has passed an examihation ehtitling him to proceed With his studies.' Mr. L. Sainsbury^of Dunedin, who is stUdying alongside Mr. Morton, gained fourth pidce in the same examination. They Were able to go to Englahd through the assistance of the New Zealand In-^ stitute of the Blindf Londoh. Another blind New. Zealander, Mr. J, H. Papesth, Of iAii6kland, formerly director of music for the NeW Zealand Blind Institute, has dohe so #ell ih his studies in Ehgland that the institute has authorised a grant to enable him to study in France.
