'.u SYDNEV, Dun.e 2. The shortage of- manpower in the Royal Australian Navy is so acute tuai; great difficultv is being cxpprienced in inanning the sliips. The latest detelopment is a dccision to immobib'se all ocean going survey ships arul eease ocean hydrographie survey work to provide a few more men for the figliting ships. The survey shij) Lachlan i3 being lent to New Zealand along witn two e.xrie.ri pn'U'J E»-dror*T*>hi.* r', to do suxveys in New Zealand water3 tor two or tliree years. The remainiug survey vessels, Warrego and Barcoo, are being placed on the reservo list. So niany men have been requir'ed tor the new aviation service and tp man the aircraft earrier Sydney, that tli& cruisers Hobart and Sliropshire have to remain on reserve. Llnlil the manning position iiiiproves, tlie hydrographio branch will be-'able to carry out oniy boat surveys in fairly sheltered waters, using 72-foot diesel launches.
