WELLINGTON, June 3. The King's Birthday winter meetings will open tomorrow . with the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie as the big attraction to racegoers throughout the Dominion. With the exception of Corineus, Ruling Master, Kauri Pine, Master Ted and Our i&old the field is not a strong one. However, these five smart" hurdlers and stayers are likely to make • a keen contest oi' it.

/ All eyes will be on the topweight in his ai/tempt to try to improve on his secon'd last year, when he carried io.5 -and was defeated in a thrilling raee by South Riding, a lightweight. ' With 11.10 to carry tomorrow weight will be a big factor against him winning. He is a grand hurd. er and stayer, and if he should succeed it will mark him as one of 'the greatest hurdlers produced in the Dominion for some years. His main danger is the vastly improved Ruling Master, who should not be troubled by the distance. Kauri Pine is looked upon in the north as a goo'd prospect. He is vdry' fit and if he takes his hurdles with confidence he will eertain'y be one of the hardest to beat. Mafcter Ted also comes in on the same category as Kauri Pine.. If the going is unusually heavy it will enhance the prospects of Our Gold.
