Maoris And Liquor
Since Maoris have been allowed to drink in hotel lounges, ho.el keepers in Northland have found in many cases that jt had encnuraged Maori women, especially the 3'ounger ones, to take advantage of tfie new order. This was stated at the annual meeting of the Marsden Licensing Committee. The licensee of the Maungaturoto Hotel thought the new . law would lead to a lot of trouble with Maori women, partigularly younger wpmen. The licpnsee of the Hikurangi Hotel expyessed similar fear and added' that Maori men did not approve of women drinking ih hotels. A Whangarei licensee thought that Maoris did not drink as much in an hotel since given the right to take liquor away.
