Ratepayers Discuss Scheme For Bus Terminal
The southern approach to Levin c'a'me* Under discussion at the monthly meeting of the Levin Ratepayers' Association. The recent publicity given to the widening of the approach was considered,'together with the'possibiiity of the Leviri Borough Councii being invo ved in the proportionate cost pf the work. After a lengthy and comprehensive discussion, in which several members aired their views, it was reso.ved that the work was not the responsibility of the council, being outside the borough boundary. A letter to this effect is to be sent to the council. It was suggesced that members of the association attend a meeting of the council in the future and a motion to this effect was carried. A very descriptive document in the form of a plan was sufcmitted by a member as a solution Lo the problem of a convenient bus terminal. It irivolved the conversion of the disused pit between Maka Mako Road and Bath Street railway crossing and the subsequent tunnelling to the adjacent highway and Cambridge Street. Tlps was received with interest by members, The propssal reflected enthusiasm and some credit was due to the proposer, Mr. W. G. Bishop, for going to such tr'ouble regarding a solution to the most talked-of problem in the town, said Mr. F. Crcot. Some time ago he had in-timate-d to the association that the pit could be utilised for such a purpose. He had said that if some early solution was not found;- the bus companies would be "fed up" with the shifting of their depots and would ultima„ely by-pass Levin altogether. Mr. W. Bishop, Jnr., said that the trouble caused by flooding due to excess rainfall could be overcome by filling, or the installation of pumping equipment. As this proposal« took the form of a long-term town planning scheme, by the time it was readyo the c.rainage scheme would take care of fhe difficulty. The plan was a sound one, said Mr. H. E. Herring. Some solution wouid have to be found as the present . arrangement was inadequa.e and' unsatisfactory. It was finally decided that -the" nroposal be left over in the. meantime until other members could see the plan and discuss it further. Mr. Bishop, Jnr., asked if the council had a plan of the proposed drainage and sewerage scheme to jbviate the unneeessary expenditure .involved in temporary septic tanks. Builders were faced with the awkward position of installing ihis amenit.y in the most desjrahle and closest p^ ition to tfie sewerage line. Mr. Herring pointed out' that as an estimate had been received fpt the work, there wouid be a plan in existen'ce. Surely, builders were entitled to peruse this on fieha'f oi their clients, he asked. After several other members had yoiced their opinions on the subject, it was deci'de'd that a letter should be sent to the borough council asking it to make the plan available to those concerned.
