In that time Somerset . ost ope wicket for 49 runs. Play began p,t noon instead of 11.30 a.m. and the wicket, though st had been covered, was very wet. Hadlee lost the toss and was rathei I i'iad not' tp have to decide whether or not to bat. ' It y/a s soop seen that the wicket v,as very slow, though 'bQth Cowie ind Cave, by dropping the' ball Jhort, were able to make it rise iharply. After 25 minutes Hill attempted n off-drive'at a half volley from Jowie and Ifoled out to Hadlee, who s.ook a good catch at silly mid-off. Gimblett, who has scored 750 runs his season, began batting strongly, m-dxiving Cowie for four, which vould haye been six if it had carri'ed six inches further. He also . obk four fours off Cave and just before rain began again put Cressvell on to the roof of the stand. Angell batted for half an hour before scoring, snicking Burtt through the slips.
