Removal Of Old Railway Nearly Completed

Demolition of the o'd railway which carried main line traffic between Marton and Wanganui for many years before the opening of the Turakina-Okoia deviation has almosu been compieted. Only three miles of track over the Turakina Hill and along Ratana F.at remain And the work' of removal is procee'ding rapidly. A'l railway equipmenir "has been sg.lvp.ged and eyen the bridge across the Whangaehu River has disappeared, oniy the piers remaining. The steel spans were taken to the Woburn wprkships before being used elsewhere. The sa.vage gangs have now reached Raiana Flat and it is expected that the work will be completed in about six weeks. Sa'tvage'd rails, sleepers and other rpateria1 are collected at Turakina. Rails still serviceable are being sent to the Rotorua district for use on the new line from Putaruru to i Tokoroa.
