Australians May Eat N.Z. Butter
SYDNEY, May 31. A butter expert has warned that, ow* ing 'to Australia's lag in the output of j butter, there was, a distinct possibilitv that Australia would have to import butter from New Zealand in a few years. Mr C. Sheehy, general manager of the Commonyealth Dairy Equalisation Committee in Brisbane, speaki'ng at the 43rd annual conference of the Aus-> tralian Institute of Dairy Factory Managers and Secretaries, said that milk production this year was likely to be no more than before the war. "With increasing population and an increasing local demand," he added, 1 ' the time will eome in a few years when we will have to draw upon New Zealand for butter to tide us over the lean periods. " Increasing eonsumption of margarine overseas, particularly Britain, was becoming a serious threat to the Australian butter export trade. Britain was getting supplies of butter from European countries and within twcr years would be able to get all the edible fats she needed."
