School Headmaster Reports To Committee
In his report to the usual monthly meeting of the Shannon School Committee last evening, the hea'dmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, stated that during May the school roll stood at 163 boys and 149 girls, a tatai of 312 pupils. "The attendance, which has been much aifected by an epidemic of measles and . other illnesses, has averaged 144 boys and 125 girls. The Health Department has decided that measles co'ntasts shall
not at present be excluded from attendance at school. This is in . accordance with the usual practice ' when the milder infectious diseases reach epidemic form. "Mrs. Rodgers and Miss N. Walker are relieving teachers pending the appointment of permanent assistants. On May 27 the school sent three basketball and three football teams to Levin to participate in the annual inter-school tournament. As- there were over 40 football teams and over 30 basketball teams playing, the experience was a valuable one to the pupils. I take this opportunity of paying a tribute to the speeial catering arrangements organised and carried out by the School Committees' Association.. "As the school holidays interfered, there was no May meeting of the Parent-Teachers' Association. The next meeting, which is the annual one, will be held at the school at 8 p.m. on June 13, when the election of officers will take place and films will be screened by Mr. W. Gibbons, of Palmerston North. "The school is indebted to Mr. R. R. Lind for his donation of a handcart, which is finding much' use at the school, and to Mr. F. E. Bradey for a gi'ft of plants for the flower garden. The distribution of cocoa to pupils at lunch-time commenced on May 30." Mr. Burtt also made mention of the children's part in the forthcoming jubilee celebrations. On Thursday afternoon there will be a picture ' programme in the Renown Theatre, kindly donated by Mrs. E. L. Hyde. Friday will be a school holiday. On Saturday the children will assemble at the school at 1 p.m. to take part in the procession. Those who are not connected with the Junior Re'd Cross or other children's organisations will parade as school pupils of the present decade. This, will eomplete the present' pupils' part in the celebrations until Sunday, when as many as possible of the senior pupils are requested to attend the combined church serviee in the Renown Theatre.
