. AUCKLAND. May 26. In the five months since the Maori--were flrst permitted to buy lifjuor fo. consumption off licensed premises, no inerease has been noted by the poliee in drunkenness and associated crimc among the natives in Auckland provin eial towns. Inquiries made in towns as far apart as Kaitaia and Opotiki revealed that the amendment to the Licensing Aet had resulted in little cliange in some districts but a noticeable improvement in others. A marked improvement was reported rfrom Auckland, Dargaville, Kaikohe. Rotorua &nd Taupo and a slight improvement from • Ngaruawahia and Pukekohe. No change was reported from Otahuhu, Tauranga, Kaitaia, Te Puke and Opotiki. Although Maori women are also permitted by the amending le gislation to drink in wromen's bars, the change has had -few effects. Many hotels have stronglV discouraged Maori women from entering and the new system has proved sHccessi^n- chieflv at a few hotels where a special room has been set aside for them. Only a smali proportion h&ve shown interest in their newly granted freedom.
