Fiordland Expedition. 0 New Zealand and American scientists collected much valuafre material and accomplished a great deal in spite of bad weather during the recent expedition to the unexplored area west of Te Anau. according to the leader, Colonel John K. Howard. He said he couid not say anything about the scientific side of '.'the expedition because analysis of the material was -notcomp1ete. A start had been made in Wellington, where 'Dr; OlaUS J*. Murie, scientific leader " of the group, was working on 'ihe material. Geophysical Survey Near Marton. Suggestion have been made that the New Zealand Government is following in the steps of American oil interests in the war years" in making a geophysical survey of Ihe Marton-Mount Stewart area. Men from the Department of Scientific and Ihdustrial Research state that they are testing new equipment. It consists of drifiing gear and scientific apparatus with which echoes of underground • explosions are recorded on a film which is developed on the spot. The echoes, it is stated, indicate the geological strata beneath the area under study.
