Tornadoes Rip Through Towns
Received Sunday, 11 p.m. NEW YORK, May 22. A series of tornadoes ripped through the Middle West last night, killing at least 29 and injuring more than 250. The death toll is expected to rise when communicaticns are restored. Tornadoes struck Ulinois, Indiana, Missouri and Iowa, damaging homes, destroying aircraft, cutting powerl.nes, uprooting trees, sniashing windows and severing water supplies. * At least 14 were killed at Cape Girardeau, Missouri; four at Shelbourne, Indiana; two at Terra Haute, Indiana; four at Palestine, Illinois; four at Wood River, Illinois; and one . at Clarksville, . Missourh, The killed at Palestine were all in a drive-in cafe which witnesses said just disap^eared. An eye-witness at Terra Hiaute said the storm virtually wiped out the west side of the town, levelling a high school gymnasium and smashing the t.op' floor from the school's main building. The tornado that struck Shelbourne flew a four-year-old" girl up a tree. She was found in the brancheS 20 feet ahove the ground but escaped witli only cuts and bruises. The death toll from tornadoes during last week is new nearly 70.
