Makuri Hotel Destroyed By Fire (Speeial to "Times.") PAHIATUA, May 20.: The Makuri Hotel, about 19 miles from Pahiatua on the Pahiatua-Ponga-roa Road, was completely destroyed by hre at about 7.15 tonight. Ten minutes after the blaze. was discovered the;building was a mass of flames, and 4n half an hour all that .remained was' a. tiass of smouldering ashes, crumpled roofing-iron and a few chimneys. The licensee-proprietor, Mr. E. R. J ury, was in the bar at the time of the outbreak, and was unaware of anythmg' being wrong until his attention was ■ called to a srnell of burning, coming apparently from the kitchen, by Mr. L.; Cooper, who had been using the'teilephone. ' On opening the kitchen door the two' men were met by a sheet of fiame, aind': in a matter of minutes the whole buitding was ablaze, little or nothing beingsaved. — * - • > '! The hotel, which was a one-storey structure, was well known in the district for many years, and was ,at one time a popnlar house for anglers who fished the Makuri River. It is understood that the building and eontents were insured, but tlie amount was not available tonight. Mrs. Jury and her son were away on holiday at Foxton Beaeh when the fire ' oficurrod.
