Smuts Party Loses Seat In By-election
CAPETOWN, May 20. General Smuts' United Party lost one seat to the Nationalist Party and ret.ained the other in the" two South African hy-eleetions. The results of which were announced to-day. ,1 Tlie seat lost was Vereeniging, wlpcli had heen faithful to Smuts for twenty years. The Nationalists won it by sixteen votes in a total polDof 11,626 and the result has slioeked Smuts 's supporters. The Nationalists now have a. working majority of five in the Assepi"' hly.
