Teachers Angry About Lack Of Housing
WELLINGTON, May 12. Every means is to be used by the New Zealand Educational Institute to have representations framed to "compel" Educational Boards or the Education Department, to supply adequate housing for teachers "as is done for the employees of some other Departments. ' ' Some debaters of the remit to this effect >at the conference of the institute, demurred at the word "compel." They held that the boards especially were in 'a difficult position over building. Mr. N. Keyes (Huntly) stated that Departments made special provision for their staffs at Huntly. The Mines Department was building for officials in charge of mines -and the Railways Department was building 30 houses in another centre. Before the hydroelectric works began np to 500 housese were built. If it were good .enough to btxild houses for min^rs and other workmen — and the speaker said he did not dispute that — it was good enough for houses to be provjded for teachers who taught the children of those workers. The remit was passed with "compel' ' stqmding.
