HASTINGS, May 11. Wethers were a main sonrce of inferest in tlie store sheep seetion at Stortfnrd Lodge to-day. Selling was beld uuder atrot-ious eonditions and th.e attendancc was smaller tlian usual. Supplies were hniited with. an entry of oniy 1500 head and an liour was all that was ■ necessary to deal with the complete yarding. Quality in-lamb ewes. sold well but the market for lambs was not fuily tested, a big draft failing to >mc forward because of the Aveatlier. liuyers of wethers had a couple of dra+'ts of quality sh.eep placed before thein. L'umpetition on these was limited but those Ijiddiug paid^ good money a line of grown sheep making I5s 2'i and a draft of i-tooths 43s. Five-year in-lamb ewes with good one^year mouths realised 36s, 6-year in-lamb ewes 3.1s 7d and light fattening ewes 17s. The only pen of lambs sold was a shorn line whieh brought its value at 26s. A good woolly wether line was passed in at 33s 6d. There was a very short yarding of fat sheep but the market though strong, did not show any tendency to harden. Prime aged ewes realised 31s 7d to 31s 10d, with prime Southdown ewes at 33s 10 d to 3os lOd and others at 31s ld. Extra prime young ewes ehanged hands at 42s ld to 45s lOd. Prime wethers made 44s 4d to 45s lOd, ligliter bringing 3Ss. Heavy lambs were quoted at 39s 10s to 12s lOd, others bringing 35s ld to 37s ld and small 32s lOd. Although the rostrum was fairly well packed for the salej the store eattle demand left an impression that many were merely onlookers. The auetion.eers had to work hard to extract bids though, wliere saies were effeeted, values were fairly well in line with last week's improved market. At no timt Vvcce bids eoniihg freely. The entry o± 600 head included some good cpiality station bred drafts but even the best failed to excitc anvthing in the nature of a spirited demand. Bulloeks in good order for wintering ehanged hands at £14 10s to £15 9s and another line was passed in at £16 ls. A figure of £15 15s
was refused for quality 3i-year steers, 30-months steers brought £12 .10s, empty cows realised' £7 10s to £9 4s; 30-months heifers £10 12s to £11 ls anu 18-months heifers £7 15s to £S lSs. Fell lininshed beef sold on a strong market when quality was offering. In the yarding of 157 head the market was well -snpplied with pinnie quality bulloeks whieh sold at up to £24 13s 6d. Weight was offering among the heifers and cows and these made their value on ^recent quotations. For beef laeking fmish there was little demand and some pens were passed in for private sale. -Prime medium, weight ox ehanged hands at £22 18s 6d to £24 13s 6u, lighter beasts selling at £17 to £20 11s. Prime quality cows sold at £13 18s 6d to £15 13s 6d with medium weights at £12 13s 6d*to £13 3s 6d and light at £11 3s 6d to £11 18s 6d. Prime heifers were traded at £13 18s Gd to £15 8s Gd, lighter bringing £11 8s 6d to £11 16s. Eunners brought £7 15s tcx £9.
