Pertinent Questions For Mr. Mason
WELLINGTON, May 11. • ' "The Minister of " Justiee, in re-ply-ing to well founded eriticism upon tbe. increase in crim.es of violenee, has evidently realisedl'the true position which is, that his office is responsible, ' ' said a statement issued today by the exeeutive of the Wellington House wives-' Association. ' 1 Ah offence b'y a released prisoner, upon whieh he has commented, is in itself sufficient to alarm many thinking people and we would ask Mr. Mason what is the duration of a fife sentence? ' Is it five, ten, ' twelve, lifteen- or -twenty years? Mr. Mason states that the utmost caution is used by the Prisons Board in the releaqe of prisoners where that release eomes within their authori'ty and their judgment, as far as concerns those sentenced for life, has " been completely vindieated in every instahce. Does the. Minister 'mean that there have been cases released by other than the eonsont of the Prisons Board and, if so, by whom — the military duthorities or Mr. Mason himself?
