Levin's Cinderella Street

"RESIDENT."

(To the Editor) Sir, -—During November; 1945, the first two hoUsbs ereeted in the Hannan Street subdivision of some 30 odd sections were oceupied by tlieir, new; owners. Steady bui-ding prugress has beeri hiade in the interval aho. today we firid that there are now in residence iio less "than 14 famiiies iri thbir new.'hoihes, while- one nioffe liriit is ready fbr occupation, five more ' in a 75 per cent to 90 per cent state of preparedness, a further two with foundations outlined and yet an.ofcher three dre to be started just as sJdh as m'eh ahd materials become available. This rate of progress speaks for itse f, but to the resident owners in this partibuiar street there are a few snagS. Already we see three of these, residential sections oceupied, two as ' builders' timber yards and one as a firewood slore yard. The ldtest distiirbance comes from a city builder who, no doubt wishing to . cash .in on Levin's building boom.; has secured for hiriiself one of the vacant sections and proposes to erect in addition cO his nbuse a workshop unit wherein. he can carry on his trade as a builder and joiner. Has the time not arrived when the eivic pbwers shbuld call a halt to this indiscriminate mixihg of industriai and residential interests? While admittihg that cireular and band saws, and also fiuzzers and planers. cah and rriust be part of

a town's progress, I think it can be squargly argued that these noisy units should be cbhfined to a distinct area where their nuisance effect is not of very great import. Our Oinderella street ^dods not dossess, as yet, a street light, and two.at least are badly needed. The ldcal gaswo'rks ran out of mains wiien they had proceeded a few chains flown the street, and the uSe of gas is at present confined to only three houses duly connected up. At least six of the house owners on the south side had their new entrances rinned up 18 months ago to permit the laying of r gas mains and the resultant 4 ear th ridge has never been • obhterated from these entrances by the Gasworks or whoever is reSponSib1e. We heard much about town planning during the recent byelection and here is something real for our couhcillors to get. their t'eeth into, and thus allow Hannan Street to rema.in what section buyers had hoped it would always be, just a quiet residential area. Yours. etc..
